Couple Win £4m and Do Nothing!

A couple in the news this week have won themselves 4 million pounds and plan to do….. nothing. Nil. A big, fat zero.

They don’t want to change their spending habits and they’re happy living in their council house.

Well, excuse me, but why do the lottery if you don’t actually want to make a difference with it? Why not leave it for someone who really needs it?

Councils have sub-standard accommodation that they use for emergency housing of families for up to two years because no council properties are available for them. then we have this couple, sitting on 4 million, who say they like it where they live and do not intend to give up their council house to someone who really needs it.

Now, this to me, sounds selfish in the extreme. Social housing is meant to be there for people  that need it, not people that could afford to buy a hundred of these same properties. There are families in dire situations, having fallen on hard times – and it can happen to any one of us at any time – that are desperate for somewhere to live. This is why our tax money susbisises these homes – for the people IN NEED – not the greedy and selfish.

Now there has been much ado if you read the Mail online, with comments form people sitting on both sides of the fence. Some say they should be allowed to stay put and others saying they should do what’s right and decent and free up the housing for someone in need. Others think that those in favour of them handing the house back to the council are just jealous. Well, maybe they should try a little time in emergency accommodation and see how much they enjoy it, see how long they think people should stand their ground for no reason.
