Families Creating Their Own Health Insurance
November 3, 2009cathyhp No Comments »Taking out their own health insurance has come in a different form for one family this week.
Tissue has been taken from the umbilical cord of a newborn baby at a cost of £2,000 and under order of the babies parents as an unusual health insurance policy should any of the family become ill later in life. Research has shown that the blood and tissue from an umbilical cord has many health benefits, including treating rare forms of cancer but you have to be a very close match.
This means that, should the baby itself become ill throughout it’s life, if the illness is something that can be treated in this way, then a perfect match is made and the possibilities are there. Up to 85 different blood and immune diseases can currently be treated quite successfully with cord blood and tissue and having this substance cryogenically frozen is becoming a popular way to insurance against future health problems.
The tissue would primarily be used for the person it came from but would also be a close match for siblings and even a basis to begin treatment should the parents become ill.
Everybody wants their best chance of a long and healthy life, so I say, this isn’t hurting anyone so good luck to them all.
